SHE Leads — Women shaping Indian politics
A Join Politics programme that prepares women to step into active politics: to contest elections, take up party responsibilities and lead in panchayats, municipalities, Assemblies and Parliament.
About the programme
India needs more women in elected office and in decision-making roles inside political parties. Many capable women are willing to serve but lack a starting point: someone to guide them, practical training, and a way into real political work.
SHE Leads closes that gap. Participants are mentored, trained in the fundamentals of public life, and given exposure to live political activity in their own region, with the goal of building women who can contest, win and lead.
The Women's Reservation Act: thousands of women leaders will be needed
The Constitution (One Hundred and Sixth Amendment) Act, 2023, known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was passed by Parliament in September 2023. It reserves one-third (33%) of seats for women in the Lok Sabha, the State Legislative Assemblies and the Legislative Assembly of Delhi.
- One-third of the seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are also reserved for women.
- The reservation comes into effect after the first census conducted after the Act and the delimitation exercise that follows it.
- It will remain in force for 15 years from its commencement (Parliament may extend it), and reserved seats will rotate after each delimitation.
- At the local level, the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments (1992) already reserve at least one-third of seats and chairperson posts in panchayats and municipalities for women, and many states have raised this to 50%.
When the reservation takes effect, parties across India will need thousands of capable women candidates and leaders. The time to prepare is now.
